Mars One: Marketing Manned Missions to Mars

Mars One intends to establish the first human settlement on Mars by 2023. 

With support from distinguished individuals like Physics Nobel Prize Laureate Gerard 't Hooft and best selling author Mary Roach, Mars One publicly announced their intentions on May 31 2012.

The process began in 2011 when Mars One worked on the mission in secret, contacting suppliers to determine feasibility and willingness. In 2013 some applicants will begin a broadcasted training and selection process. In 2014 the preparation will begin for a 2016 supply mission and communications satellite. In 2018 a rover will land on Mars in the desired settlement site. In 2021 all essential supplies and life support will have landed at the site. The rovers will begin preparing the site for human arrival. On September 14 2022 the first four settlers will launch to Mars, landing in 2023. Follow up groups will land every two years. Each settler will remain on Mars for the rest of their lives.



Mars One must be taken seriously because their marketing strategy has no precedent, and when led competently it cannot fail. But what is their strategy exactly?

Finding Funds for Space Missions

For private space missions and projects the biggest obstacle is often funding. With a few exceptions, most space companies have been started by someone with a lot of personal capital, otherwise they would have no way to get their company off the ground. Space research and development is an expensive business and most private space companies must vigorously pursue government grants if they have any hope of becoming competitive.

So what happens when the government doesn't take an interest in a space company's projects?

They die. The space company might struggle along with personal funds, but eventually they need government support to sustain the research, development, and testing necessary to remain relevant.

Is there no other way? Is the government the only entity that can provide funding for space projects and missions?

Right now the government is virtually the only consistent customer for anything more than satellite launches  They are the only entity that will fund space projects and missions for the sake of research and development.

There is an alternative to government funding, but it requires space companies to develop a completely new Public Relations (PR) strategy.

Space companies must capitalize on public interest in space. Space companies put a lot of attention toward proving their missions' scientific worth. If they put more effort into showcasing the public interest in their missions they would find an influx of revenue.

What?! How?

Space missions receive enormous publicity, with millions of people viewing or reading about even the most inconsequential of them. Most major news networks have at least one article about every launch that takes place. With each of those articles is a photo that relates to the mission, whether it be of the launch or the spacecraft itself.

Big missions receive even more publicity. For example, in less than two days following the touchdown of Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, NASA's homepage received 513 million hits. (Weiss) That doesn't include the views from all the other sites that ran stories on Spirit.

Every major news network has articles on the Mars Exploration Rovers whenever they make a significant discovery. Usually included with those articles or TV coverage is an image of the rover, like the one on the right of Opportunity.

This image has been viewed hundreds of millions, if not billions of times.

If space companies ran PR campaigns that emphasized how popular space missions are and have the potential to be, they could receive sponsors from corporations around the world that are seeking to increase their own publicity.

Don't believe me? Just look at NASCAR. High estimates give NASCAR around 80 million fans in the United States. The 2011 Sprint Cup received an average of 6.5 million viewers. Corporations will spend upwards of 20 million dollars a year to have their logo prominently displayed on one of the cars. The teams often receive multiple sponsors for the same car with one sponsor paying more to have their logo dominate the car.


Each car generates roughly $40-50 million from corporations who want their logo somewhere on the car. In addition to the big logos that are obvious in the image to the right, sponsors pay for smaller logos on the car. Sponsors pay all that money to have their logos on the car for only one year.

Now what if a highly anticipated space mission was sponsored by a corporation? Let's use Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity as an example again. What if it had some corporations sponsor it in return for getting their logo on the rover? Let's pretend Mars Travel and Company X sponsored it. It might look something like the image to the left.

Don't you think corporations would be willing to pay a lot of money for the publicity and exposure that would get them? How much do you think they would pay? $100 million? Maybe even $500 million? Or what about $1 billion?

Why not? After all, many corporations have shown a willingness to pay around $20 million a year for their logo on a NASCAR vehicle.

NASA is a government entity and there are laws against this sort of advertising, but what about private space companies? Why haven't they started getting sponsors? They could receive funding from many different companies, eliminating the monopoly the government has on the decision making process for almost all space missions.

So it might look a little tacky to have WAL-MART or DELL on a spacecraft, but why does that even matter? Does it matter who profits from space exploration if everyone benefits?

It doesn't make a difference if a discovery is made by the Sony rover or Opportunity, either way a discovery has been made. If a company helps pay for a space mission or project, who cares if they get publicity from it. Humanity would be able to have missions that aren't restricted by what one group wants.

How can space companies make this happen?

They need to start emphasizing the amount of public interest in their missions. they need to have a PR campaign showing just how fascinated people are with them. Once this is established they need to go to corporations and say, "Hey, we can give you massive publicity if you help us fund this mission." Corporations have shown that they are willing to pay millions to have their logo put in front of an audience, so why not use that to fund really awesome space missions?

The Airline Precedent for Space Funding

Popular airlines Spirit in the US and Ryanair in Europe have been gaining millions in ad revenue for years by renting empty spaces on and in their aircraft. How does that work? Simple, they set a price and say "Hey, if you pay us $14 million we'll put your logo on the outside of all of our aircraft for a year." They even sell space inside the cabin. According to USA Today they charge "$196,000 for three months of ads on the overhead bins in Spirit's planes, $119,000 for ads on the tray tables or $18,500 for ads on air-sickness bags." The airlines get extra money and the advertisers get more exposure. The problem is that all those ads annoy passengers who don't like being inundated with ads while inside of a plane: one of the last 'safe havens' from the outside world. So while airlines and ad companies are happy, the customers are not.

Selling ad space on and in aircraft may or may not work out because the customers don't like being inundated on planes, but what about on spacecraft? While NASA might have nearly insurmountable restrictions on spacecraft advertising, what about the private industry? What is to stop SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, or any other private space company from renting space on, or in their spacecraft?


How many people follow every space launch? How much exposure and publicity would a company get if they had their logo on the outside of a spacecraft? How much would a company pay for to advertise on one launch? In order to find out we can look back at past advertisements in space.

Mars Travel - A New Company Seeking to Revolutionize the Commercial Space Industry


Like many space enthusiasts I despaired every time I heard another space project was cancelled or postponed due to funding issues. But what could I do? Even simple space projects and missions cost millions, if not billions of dollars. Most people don't have that kind of money lying around (no really?!), and I definitely don't.

Does that make us helpless? Should we have to accept that space is only the domain of the government or super rich? Can average people actually make an impact on this multi-billion dollar industry? Most people will say no, that such a thing is impossible, but are they right?

That is the question I struggled with for a long time because like millions of other people, space fascinates me and I hate seeing it relegated to the back burner as if it isn't important to humanity. I decided I was going to do something about it, so I created Mars Travel, a company dedicated to connecting space projects and missions with corporate sponsors. {Learn More About Mars Travel} The company is just starting out, but soon I hope to begin linking space projects with funding from corporate sponsors. To do this I will need your help, but first let me explain why this will work.

Funding Space Missions and Projects Without NASA

These days NASA is on the congressional chopping block. Their budget was cut from $18.7 billion in 2010 to around $17.9 billion in 2011. Despite this, NASA has pledged to continue funding its most expensive flagship programs, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Space Launch System (SLS) with Orion Capsule, despite the JWST costing a third more than originally expected. The original price tag on the telescope was $6.5 billion, but that has since been revised to $8.7 billion. The senate has said JWST will get $530 million in 2012, which is around 3% of the annual budget.  This is just for the JWST; the SLS will cost around $3 billion annually, which is 16.8% of the budget. These programs are immensely important for the advancement of science and discovery, but they will take up almost a fifth of NASA's overall budget annually. If NASA's funding is cut it will create uncertainty for the future of projects that were counting on NASA to fund them, but which may be deemed not important enough to continue.

If NASA funding smaller projects is such a liability, why don't those projects go elsewhere?

The simple answer: there is no real precedence. Who else has the money to fund space projects that cost millions, if not billions of dollars? If NASA decides  it cannot afford to fund a sample-return mission from Mars,  is there any other way for that important project to get funding? What about other important space missions and projects? If there was a viable alternative means of funding for space projects, wouldn't it have emerged already?

There are two answers, but they might take some time to digest:

SpaceX is Winning the Race to Mars

In the race to the Moon the primary competitors were the Americans and the Soviets and their state funded space agencies. At the beginning of the space race the governments of both countries invested heavily in their respective space agencies because it was deemed in the best interest of their countries. America successfully sent a manned mission to the Moon on July 20, 1969 and after a few more landings, during which time the Soviets were unable to launch their own manned mission, they essentially declared victory and to this day humanity has never sent a man beyond low-Earth orbit. Thus the first space race led to one of mankind's greatest accomplishments, but culminated with disappointment for millions of space enthusiasts.

A government is a broad organization that is responsible for everything from the economy to national defense to food regulation. It makes sense that governments cannot focus on space travel and exploration when there are more pressing responsibilities closer to home it must deal with. Governments have so many tasks and responsibilities it is easy to see why exploring space has been relegated to the back burner. Space enthusiasts have long despaired over the lack of nationalistic fervor that once drove the space industry, fearing that further exploration and research would all but end in the years to come. That fear has been misplaced.
