Mars Photo of the Day - Mar 19 2012

Today's Images of Mars show simulated views of The Red Planet as seen from Earth every two hours between June 5, 2001 00:16 UTC and June 7, 2001 01:20 UTC. The simulations were created using images from Mars Global Surveyor. In order to fully appreciate these images you need to go to the original article because from there you can click on each individual globe and see an enlarged version of it.

Mars Photo of the Day - Feb 14 2012

Today's Image of Mars is suited especially for Valentines Day! It shows a heart-shaped pit formed by a collapse within a graben. The pit imaged is about 2.3km at its widest point.

This image was taken by the Mars Global Surveyor's Mars Orbiter Camera in 1999, but it still can be used to show how much you heart your space loving Valentine!

Mars Photo of the Day - Dec 30 2011

Today's Image of Mars show the South polar cap in early Spring as taken in May 2005. This image is a mosaic of images taken by the Mars Global Surveyor. A lot of this ice is carbon dioxide ice, but with an underlying layer of water ice. By this time the carbon dioxide ice has likely begun sublimating, since the temperatures have begun rising and carbon dioxide ice begins sublimating at temperatures greater than -78.5°C (197.5 K, −104.2 °F).

Mars Photo of the Day - Dec 2 2011

Today's Image of Mars shows Ceraunius Tholus (lower) and Uranius Tholus (upper), two Tharsis volcanoes on Mars. The fact that these volcanoes have craters on them tells us that the volcanoes are very old and inactive today. If they were active then lava flows would have covered any impact craters.

if you look at the bottom right of the larger Ceranius Tholus you will see that it is much lighter than the surrounding terrain. What you see are the deposits left from the global dust storm in 2001.

To give you some idea of scale, the large crater you see in the center of Ceraunius Tholus is approximately 25km in diameter. Ceraunius Tholus rises about as high above the Martian surface as Mt. Everest.

Mars Photo of the Day - Nov 26 2011

Today's Image of Mars shows part of Mars at the boundary between night and day. You can see Gale Crater is beginning to feel the first rays of morning light. It is the crater in the center with the large central mound.

This will be the landing spot for Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity when it touches down in August 2012. [Learn More About Mars Science Laboratory's Mission]

This image was created using information from Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter, which flew on NASA's Mars Global Surveyor orbiter.
