New Theory Explains Phobos and Deimos

In a new article published in the journal Nature, researchers from Belgium, France and Japan offer  a new theory on how Phobos and Deimos came to be. They suggest that there was a a giant impact with Mars that created a debris ring around the planet. This inner part of the debris ring would have hosted the preponderance of material and included at least one moon with a diameter of around 200km. Meanwhile the outer ring held less debris, which through the gravitational influence of the large moon could have eventually clumped together to form Phobos and Deimos.

So then what became of the large, 200km moon? This new theory suggests that it crashed back into Mars, splitting into hundreds of small parts that then disintegrated as they fell through the atmosphere, with some of the larger pieces leaving small impact craters on the surface.

Alas, in 20-40 million more years the same fate will befall Phobos.

Today's Image of Mars is of Phobos, the larger of the two Martian moons and, if the mission can be saved, the destination for Roscosmos' Phobos-Grunt.

Phobos is 27 km at its longest point and orbits Mars at about 3000 miles above the surface in a little over 7 hours. Stickney Crater is on the bottom left of this image.

It's uncertain how Phobos became a moon of Mars, or even where it came from. It may be a main-belt asteroid that was captured by Mars' gravity, or have formed during the early stages of the solar system. Another theory suggests that the ejecta from a large impact on Mars resulted in many moons, but that over the course of millions of years, those moons fell back to the surface. One of the missions of Phobos-Grunt is to determine the origin of Phobos.

Today's Mars Photo is of Phobos, one of the Martian Moons. Phobos is 27 km at its longest point and orbits Mars at about 3000 miles above the surface in a little over 7 hours.

 This image was taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on March 23 2008. The surface is covered with craters, but the largest one, Stickney crater, can be seen on the right side of this image.
